A. The details of the examination
1. English Usage
Full mark: 120
Sections of the exam
A. Reading comprehension: 35 marks
B. Vocabulary: 15 marks (1 mark each)
C: Grammar items (40 marks)
Tenses (active and passive): Approximately 20 marks
Connectives and Question tags: Approximately 20 marks
D: Sentence Rewriting
Reported Speech: Approximately 15 marks
Relative clauses: Approximately 15 marks
2. Writing composition
Full mark: 100
Time allowed: 45 minutes
Minimum number of words: 180
a. Underline the keywords and choose the correct tense
Past perfect tense: after, before
Past tense: ago, yesterday, year(1988), the other day, last week/month
Past continuous: when ("ed" or "ing"), while (“ing”), this time last week
Present perfect (just now, ever, yet, never, "how long have you done something",
for 3 years, since 1987, recently, in recent years/decades)
Present continuous: at the moment, now, at present
Present tense: never, usually, seldom, often, describing facts or habits
Future tense: next week/year, in a few weeks/ years, in 2010, soon
b. Agreement of the verb
Wrong: The watches was made in Switzerland.
Right: The watches were made in Switzerland.
Wrong: The population of the country are very high.
Correct: The population of the country is very high.
c. Choosing active voice and passive voice
Translate (??) the whole sentence before choosing the correct voice.
In most cases, you have to choose passive voice when you see the word "by".
Wrong: The organization set up in 1967.
Right: The organization was set up in 1967.
Wrong: The pencil boxes lost last week.
Right: The pencil boxes were lost last week.
Note: Remember the correct spellings of past participles.
2. Relative clauses
◇ Non-defining relative clause (with comma)
a. names, places
b. This, that, these, those
c. My his, her
◇ Defining relative clause (without comma)
a. The noun
Example: The boy is fat. The boy is a student in ABC Secondary School
Answer: The boy who is fat is a student in ABC secondary school.
3. Reported speech
The day before yesterday.

4. Reading Comprehension
Read the questions once before answering the questions.
Underline all the relevant (??) points.
Use correct tenses in your answers.
5. Vocabulary
Decide if a noun, a verb, an adjective or an adverb should be used.
Think about the meaning of the sentence.
Try to write down the most suitable answer.
Check the spelling, tenses (if the answer is a verb) and see whether plural forms
should be used (if the answer is a noun).
