Spelling mistakes were commonly found
• Problems frequently occurred in the use of
tenses, subject-verb agreement, parts of
speech, singular/plural/ uncountable nouns
and spelling.
• weak students knew a lot of expressions but
had little awareness of their appropriacy
did not score top marks.
Recommendations
• more aware of your own grammatical and spelling
proofread your own work at all times
leave time to make changes to word choice
carefully edit-simple, common vocabulary is
correctly spelt, no obvious subject-verb agreement
• not only to read extensively but should also pay
attention to intensive reading, where practices such
as taking notes, writing logs and letters to
newspapers to share ideas are necessary for
developing critical & communication ability in writing

S.4 Half-yearly Exam: English Paper 2
Marker's report (Part A)
General Comment: Candidates did not do well in this part because they failed to address the topic.
Average mark: 12
Note: Candidates who got a low mark in content would not score high in language & organization even
their English is good because their content is irrelevant/off-topic.
Analyze the question
First part: only a background/lead-in
Second part: question to be addressed
Some students misunderstood the question and talked about only the first part / speaking skill
Don't copy the question - paraphrase (words are not counted as they are not your own words)
Key word - GRAMMAR
Off topic - our focus should be 'grammar', not 'how to improve English'
You should address the question by saying whether to emphasize grammar usage in DSE will help improve
English (grammar focus in DSE → language awareness)
Proofread - yours should not be an example of poor grammar!
Strange ideas from candidates' work -
it is not a must for Hong Kong people to speak proper English as our mother tongue is Cantonese (very
risky stance - it is a debate which is very difficult to win in an English paper!)
softwares can correct grammar mistakes - use them (so why you are here?)
it will cause inconvenience in their daily life (what inconvenience?)
we need to speak proper English because foreigners always ask us for directions (so let them get lost!)
people should not complain even university graduates make lots of grammar mistakes because it will
make the students afraid of English and not learn English properly. They will lose confidence in speaking
and writing English (so let it be!?)
Lack elaboration and examples: your opinions should be well-supported and elaborated by examples
chinglish: 'students are necessary to do more’⇒ it is necessary for students to do more
cyber language / internet slang⇒ emoji; u (you), 4(for),
Lots of students mix up the following terms
Foreigners =/= English native speakers
English native speakers =/= good grammar (you are Chinese → are you a good Chinese teacher?)
Misuse/overuse of connectives: 'firstly', 'secondly'; 'last but not least'
Confusing words/phrases
Practise (v) vs practice (n) (though 'practice' as a verb is acceptable in American English, 'practise' is
preferable as we talk about proper English here)
Complain (v) vs complaint (n)
